Comparison- Russia emancipated the serfs just like Abraham Lincoln emancipated the slaves. In both societies the change as gradual and the newly emancipated people did not have equal rights.
Russia was no longer considered a great land power by the rest of Europe. In order to aid in the power to Russia's name the tsarist government created a program of reform. They started out by freeing the serfs. This huge movement in social reform helped fuel the need for industrialization during the 19th century.
Tars
Tars
Tars were the governmental leaders of a multicultural land that stretched from Poland to the Pacific ocean. These Tars had problems trying to keep their society together. This was because only half of the Russian population spoke Russian or practiced Russian orthodox faith.
The Russian Orthodox church supported the tars as well as the upper class nobles. Though most of the population was made of peasants because serfdom was still prevalent.
The Crimean War
During the 19th century Russia expanded to the east west and south.
West- Towards the Mediterranean
East- Manchuria
South- Caucasus
Later in their last attempt to expand they went into the Balkan branches of the ottoman empire. After this occurred the balance of power in Europe was disrupted. To overcome this all the major powers in Europe teamed up against Russia.
Russia could not stand to western Europe's Industrial advantage so they lost many lives and gained a massive war debt.
Control after the war-
The government could no longer support the tars expansion, so the tars changed the social order to better fit their needs and went through an extensive reconstructing process.
